National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day was Saturday, and officers with the Mankato Department of Public Safety were outside of the Public Safety Center on South Front Street to collect unneeded prescriptions, over the counter medications, or other drugs.

Mankato Police collected 219.8 pounds of medications Saturday in conjunction with National Drug Take-Back Day.

Commander Dan Schisel said, “We actually received 219.8 pounds of prescriptions that were turned in.”

Schisel said it was a resounding success, because, “A year ago I had 89.2 pounds – so this was a huge increase. The community really responded to cleaning out those cupboards.”

The event, Schisel said, keeps drugs out of the hands of vulnerable children, those struggling with addiction, and the area’s drinking water and landfills.
