Rising floodwaters on the Watonwan River forced the evacuation of more than a dozen people in Garden City.

Authorities say an ice dam let loose upriver, sending water and sheets of ice over the riverbanks and into neighborhoods.

Flood levels hit more than 5 feet Wednesday and officials say the current was so strong it washed away a city street. City leaders say it will likely take months to rebuild.

The rising water stranded some and many have basements submerged.
