The costly ordeal of a central Minnesota grandparent can be a warning for us all.
The so called “grand child in jail” scam claimed another victim recently after a Sartell area resident told the Stearns County Sheriff’s office they were dooped out of 4-thousand dollars. The scammer called the victim claiming to be their grandchild in need of bail money. The victim was instructed to purchase multiple Target gift cards, then read the numbers on the back of the cards over the phone. The victim complied, but eventually realized it was a scam and tried the freeze the cards. By that time the fraudsters had already used the money. The sheriff’s office says no law enforcement agency will take gift cards as bail.
