MRCI in New Ulm is taking steps to make returning to work easier for breastfeeding mothers.

With the support from a Brown, Nicollet, Le Sueur, and Waseca Counties Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (BNLW SHIP) grant, MRCI is creating a private space for employees who are breastfeeding mothers to express milk. The room will also be available to all employees as a quiet space they can use during their personal breaks throughout the day.

According to the Office on Women’s Health, more than 80% of new mothers in the United States begin breastfeeding, and 6 in every 10 new mothers are in the workforce.

The BNLW SHIP grant will help supply the room with a recliner, small refrigerator, a “Do Not Disturb” sign, and other equipment. Supporting breastfeeding aligns with SHIP’s goal to create healthier communities through workplace wellness.
