Scammers are preying on water quality concerns trying to sell over-priced and often ineffective water filter systems. Karla Peterson with the public water supply unit at MDH says if you are in the market for a filtration system, do your homework.

“There are three different organizations that will certify them, the Water Quality Association. Underwriters Laboratories and the National Sanitation Foundation. basically, you can go to their website and type in the contaminant you’re concerned about and they will pull treatment units that will remove that contaminant.”

Peterson says never take the word of any salesperson who shows up and claims your water tested positive for a contaminant. She says your best bet if you are concerned is to send your water sample to an accredited lab for analysis.
